Thieves Steal Valuable Renoir Paintings in French Riviera Heist
In a brazen early-morning theft, two thieves broke into the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, stealing four valuable paintings by the renowned Impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The incident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. on September 8, 2026, when the thieves cut through a garden fence to access the museum. Mayor Bryan Masson reported that the alarm was triggered at 5:48 a.m., prompting police to arrive just five minutes later. In their haste to escape, the thieves dropped two of the stolen paintings in the museum's garden, managing to flee with the other two.
The stolen artworks, including "Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano," "Coco Lisant," and "Young Girl at the Well," are collectively valued at around $10.5 million. Surveillance footage captured the two suspects entering the museum, but as of Tuesday, police were still searching for them. Mayor Masson condemned the theft, stating that targeting the Renoir Museum is akin to attacking the history and heritage of Cagnes-sur-Mer, and he called for enhanced security measures at museums across France.

The museum, which is situated in the estate where Renoir spent his final years and passed away in 1919, has been a cultural landmark since its opening in 1960. It houses a collection of 13 Renoir paintings, along with sculptures, furniture, and photographs. Following the theft, the museum was closed for police investigations.
What They Hid
This incident is part of a troubling trend of art thefts in France, which has seen a rise in both the frequency and violence of such crimes. Last year, a significant robbery occurred at the Louvre, where thieves made off with crown jewels valued at approximately $102 million. Europol recently reported that art robberies in Europe are increasingly being perpetrated by opportunistic criminals, often recruited through social media, rather than organized gangs.
The Renoir Museum heist raises questions about the security of cultural institutions and the measures in place to protect invaluable artworks. As investigations continue, the art world watches closely, hoping for the swift recovery of the stolen pieces and justice for this audacious crime.
