Norwegian Police Recover 66,000 U.S. Silver Coins in Money Laundering Case

Norwegian police have made a remarkable discovery in their ongoing investigation into a money laundering operation, recovering nearly 67,000 U.S. silver coins. This breakthrough came after officers received a tip regarding a van swerving on a highway near Oslo in April 2025. Upon stopping the vehicle in Baerum, authorities found tens of thousands of American Eagle silver coins. A second van that arrived shortly after was also found to be carrying a substantial number of coins, bringing the total to around 66,000, valued at approximately 25 million Norwegian krone, or about $2.65 million.

The economic crime unit, known as Okokrim, has since announced that three Norwegians—two men and a woman—have been sentenced to prison for their roles in the illegal possession of these coins. They were convicted on charges of aggravated money laundering, stemming from allegations that the coins were acquired through proceeds from a major investment scheme in the United States. The sentences handed down range up to 2.5 years in prison.

Interestingly, two British nationals who were also implicated in the case were acquitted of the charges against them. Both parties have the right to appeal the verdict, which remains subject to review. Public Prosecutor Jon André Hvoslef-Eide expressed satisfaction over the recovery of the silver coins, emphasizing the importance of returning the misappropriated assets to the victims of the fraud in the U.S. However, he noted that the victims would only receive their assets once the judicial process is fully concluded.

What They Hid

This recovery is part of a broader investigation that has been ongoing for several years. In fact, this is not the first time authorities have uncovered a significant cache of U.S. silver coins; an earlier hoard of 79,500 coins was discovered in 2019. Investigators continue to search for additional missing coins at the request of American authorities, highlighting the ongoing complexities and international dimensions of this case.

The U.S. Mint produces American Eagle coins in various metals, including gold, silver, and palladium, each with different market values. Given the recent rise in silver prices, the Norwegian haul is now worth even more than when it first went missing, raising questions about the broader implications of such money laundering schemes and the effectiveness of international cooperation in addressing these issues.
