Brooklyn's Alona Katz Targets $11 Billion Crypto Scam Networks

In a significant crackdown on crypto fraud, Brooklyn's Assistant District Attorney Alona Katz has led efforts to disrupt scam networks that have collectively defrauded Americans of over $11 billion. The operation, executed by Katz's Virtual Currency Unit (VCU) in collaboration with the FBI, resulted in the seizure of 241 scam domains and 112 servers on October 14, 2026. This action marks the culmination of a three-year investigation into a sophisticated network of crypto investment scams with ties to Eastern Europe, particularly Ukraine.

The VCU was established in 2023 to address the alarming rise of crypto fraud affecting the borough's substantial Russian-speaking population. Katz's team has focused on identifying and dismantling operations that prey on these communities, utilizing targeted Russian-language advertisements on platforms like Facebook to lure victims to fake investment platforms. Once individuals fell victim to these scams, they were often targeted again through recovery scams, which promised to help them regain their lost funds but instead exploited their desperation.

The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center reported that Americans lost approximately $11.366 billion to crypto fraud in 2025, a staggering 22% increase from the previous year. Investment scams accounted for the majority of these losses, totaling around $7.228 billion. Notably, victims aged 60 and older reported nearly $4.4 billion in losses, highlighting the vulnerability of older individuals to such schemes.

Katz's recent operation is part of a larger strategy to combat crypto fraud in Brooklyn. Since the VCU's inception, it has disrupted over 400 domains connected to fraudulent activities. The October operation alone accounted for a significant portion of these efforts, with the 241 domains representing a major step in the fight against online scams. In a previous action in June 2024, the VCU seized domains linked to at least $5 million in losses, demonstrating the scale of the problem.

Tracking Funds in the Crypto Underworld

The VCU employs blockchain tracing technology to track the movement of funds across crypto wallets, allowing investigators to follow the money trail associated with these scams. Despite these efforts, the enforcement gap remains wide, with prosecutors recovering only about $300,000 for victims against estimated losses in the tens of millions. As of now, no arrests have been reported in connection with the recent operation, underscoring the challenges faced by law enforcement in prosecuting cross-border fraud cases.

What They Hid

Katz has also been advocating for stronger state legislation to enhance the prosecution of crypto scams, recognizing the need for more robust legal frameworks to protect vulnerable communities. The ability of scam operators to quickly establish new websites complicates enforcement efforts, particularly when cases involve international elements.

As the crackdown continues, the focus remains on whether New York will act on the proposed legislation and if the October operation will lead to any charges. The urgency of the situation is clear, as more victims seek justice and the return of their lost funds. The developments in Brooklyn serve as a stark reminder of the targeted nature of these scams and the pressing need for increased vigilance and legal protections in the rapidly evolving world of cryptocurrency.
