Chinese National Extradited for $36 Million Cryptocurrency Scam
Zhen Zhao, a 44-year-old Chinese national, has been extradited from the Netherlands to California, where he faces serious charges related to a cryptocurrency investment scam that reportedly swindled nearly $37 million from 174 victims across the United States. The scheme, often referred to as a 'pig butchering' or romance baiting scam, involved cybercriminals establishing trust with potential victims through social media, dating platforms, and messaging apps, only to lead them into fraudulent investment opportunities.
According to prosecutors, Zhao worked alongside accomplices located in the United States and Cambodia to deceive victims into transferring substantial amounts of money into accounts controlled by the scammers. They falsely promised lucrative returns on investments in digital assets, but instead, the funds were diverted for personal gain.

The criminal network allegedly reached out to targets through unsolicited text messages, social media interactions, and even phone calls, promoting fake digital asset investments. Victims were misled into believing their investments were growing when, in reality, their money was being siphoned off.
The U.S. Department of Justice reported that Zhao and his associates constructed counterfeit websites designed to mimic legitimate cryptocurrency trading platforms. Victims were convinced to send their funds through these fraudulent sites, believing they were making sound investments. Once the money was transferred, Zhao and his co-conspirators arranged for Deltec Bank to convert the funds into the stablecoin Tether (USDT) and then transferred these assets to a digital wallet controlled from Cambodia. From there, the funds were further distributed to leaders of various scam operations throughout the region.
The Scale of Financial Deception
In total, victims transferred over $36.9 million into this scheme, with funds originating from U.S. bank accounts and funneled into an account at Deltec Bank in the Bahamas, which was opened under the name Axis Digital Limited. Zhao was charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering in August 2025 and faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years if convicted.
The Cover Story
Notably, eight of Zhao's accomplices have already pleaded guilty, with two receiving prison sentences of 51 and 46 months, respectively. This case highlights the growing concern over investment scams, as the FBI's 2025 Internet Crime Report indicated that such frauds resulted in losses exceeding $8.6 billion last year, reflecting a significant increase from the previous year.
The implications of this case extend beyond Zhao's individual actions, as it underscores the pervasive nature of cryptocurrency scams and the sophisticated methods employed by fraudsters to exploit unsuspecting victims. As authorities continue to pursue justice in these cases, the question remains: how can potential investors protect themselves from falling prey to similar schemes in the future?
