Georgia Businessman Sentenced to 15 Years for $76 Million Ponzi Scheme

Edwin Brant Frost IV, a businessman from Georgia, has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for his role in a Ponzi scheme that deceived more than 300 investors and resulted in a staggering loss of $76 million. Chief US District Judge Leigh Martin May imposed the sentence after Frost pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges earlier this year. The court also ordered him to pay restitution amounting to $76,454,374.39.

Frost operated the fraudulent scheme through his company, First Liberty Building and Loan, LLC, based in Newnan, Georgia. From 2021 through July 2025, he solicited investments for short-term "bridge loans" intended for commercial borrowers, promising returns between 8% and 18%. He marketed First Liberty as a lender aligned with Christian values and conservative politics, claiming that investments were safe and would generate substantial returns.

However, federal prosecutors revealed that Frost's claims were largely fabricated. Few, if any, borrowers had received pre-approval for loans backed by the Small Business Administration, as he had claimed. By 2021, the company's legitimate lending operations were failing, and instead of informing investors about the financial difficulties, Frost resorted to using funds from new investors to pay earlier investors, a hallmark of Ponzi schemes.

Investigators discovered that Frost siphoned at least $5 million from investor funds for his personal use, financing a lavish lifestyle that included a $230,000 luxury rental in Maine, over $140,000 at high-end jewelry stores, and more than $570,000 in political contributions. His expenditures also included a $20,800 luxury watch and over $2 million in personal credit card bills.

Impact on Victims and Community Trust

The fallout from Frost's actions devastated many of his investors, particularly retirees who had entrusted him with their life savings. U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg condemned Frost's exploitation of trust, likening him to a "false prophet" who misused religion and politics to lure in unsuspecting investors. He emphasized the profound impact on families who lost their financial security due to Frost's deceitful practices.

The investigation into Frost's scheme involved multiple federal and state agencies, underscoring the collaborative effort required to address complex financial fraud. Special Agent in Charge Marlo Graham of the FBI's Atlanta Field Office remarked on the extensive harm caused to those who believed in Frost's promises. The case highlights the importance of vigilance against financial deception, particularly in schemes that prey on vulnerable populations.

Consequences and Accountability

Frost's operations serve as a cautionary tale about the mechanisms of deception in investment schemes. By presenting himself as a trustworthy figure aligned with conservative values, he created a facade that attracted investors seeking both financial returns and a sense of community. The allure of high returns, combined with the perceived safety of religious and political alignment, made his scheme particularly convincing. However, as the investigation revealed, the reality was a stark contrast to the promises made, leading to significant financial ruin for many involved.

Ultimately, Frost's sentencing reflects a commitment to holding financial fraudsters accountable for their actions. The collaborative investigation by the FBI, the FDIC Office of Inspector General, and other agencies demonstrates a robust response to financial crimes. As Frost begins his prison term, the case remains a poignant reminder of the vulnerabilities inherent in investment opportunities, especially those that exploit personal beliefs and community trust. The repercussions of his actions will resonate with victims for years to come, leaving many to rebuild their lives after losing their savings to a calculated scheme.
